Founded in 1832, First Presbyterian Church has long been part of the spiritual life of Laurens, SC. Generations have gathered here for worship, fellowship, and service to the community.

This heritage lays a strong foundation for the future as we continue to be a place where people of all ages can grow in faith, build meaningful friendships, serve our community, and find encouragement for everyday life.

Laurens History

The church was officially organized on April 1, 1832, by the Reverend Samuel B. Lewers, beginning with only 14 charter members. In its early years, the congregation met in the local courthouse, moving to its current location on Main Street in 1850. First Presbyterian Church in Laurens is an iconic downtown Laurens landmark and is listed in the National Register as part of the Laurens Historic District.

The Reverend Samuel B. Lewers founded the church with 14 charter members.

1840

Membership grew to 69 parishioners.

1850

The congregation dedicated its first church building, a simple brick structure on Church Street (also referred to as Main Street), with The Reverend Lewers presiding before his retirement.

1893

The first service took place in the present sanctuary, a landmark building on land purchased from Laurensville Female College for $800.

1957

The Education wing was constructed, completed in time for the church's 125th anniversary.

1982

Hunter Hall was built and dedicated during the 150th anniversary.

2007

The church commemorated its 175th anniversary with a year-long celebration, including the burial of a time capsule to be opened at the church’s 200th anniversary in 2032.

2014

A portico was added.

Throughout its history, our church has been committed to serving God, with missions and community service being a key focus. We celebrate our rich heritage and look forward to many more years of loving our neighbors and serving our community.
